The Bundesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit is Germany's Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information. German data protection supervision is federal: the BfDI oversees federal public bodies, telecommunications and postal operators, while sixteen state authorities supervise the private sector and state bodies within their Länder. The BfDI also handles freedom of information requests at federal level and covers intelligence services, law enforcement and border matters.

Why it matters for compliance teams
Germany's federal structure is the practical complication: a company operating across multiple Länder answers to different state authorities, whose positions do not always coincide, and the BfDI's remit covers only part of the picture.
