The Institut der Wirtschaftsprüfer in Deutschland is Germany's principal professional institute for public auditors. Unlike the WPK it is a voluntary, not-for-profit association rather than a statutory chamber — but its pronouncements are what German auditors actually apply in practice. The German auditing framework builds on the International Standards on Auditing, translated for German application and supplemented where national requirements demand it.
What the IDW publishes
- IDW Prüfungsstandards (IDW PS), the auditing standards applied to German engagements
- IDW Stellungnahmen zur Rechnungslegung (IDW RS), statements on accounting questions
- IDW Standards (IDW S), covering areas such as business valuation and restructuring opinions
- IDW Prüfungshinweise (IDW PH) and Rechnungslegungshinweise (IDW RH), practical guidance
- Draft pronouncements for comment, and responses to national and international consultations
Why it matters for compliance teams
IDW pronouncements reach well beyond audit firms. IDW S 1 governs business valuation in German corporate transactions and disputes, and IDW RS statements settle accounting treatment questions under the HGB that the statute leaves open. Finance teams encounter them whether or not they ever read an auditing standard.
Seqlense DOC indexes IDW pronouncements alongside DRSC accounting standards and the WPK's supervisory framework, so German finance and audit teams can work from one corpus.
