Banca d'Italia is Italy's central bank and a member of the Eurosystem. Beyond monetary policy implementation it supervises Italian banks and financial intermediaries, oversees payment systems and market infrastructure, acts as the national anti-money-laundering authority, and serves as Italy's national resolution authority. For significant Italian banks it works within the ECB's Single Supervisory Mechanism; for the rest it supervises directly.
What Banca d'Italia publishes
- Circolari, its principal supervisory instrument — Circular 285 on prudential supervision being the central reference
- Provvedimenti and regulations, including detailed AML provisions
- Supervisory communications to intermediaries setting expectations on specific themes
- The Financial Stability Report and the Economic Bulletin
- Extensive statistical series, working papers and occasional papers
- Sanctions decisions and public registers of authorised intermediaries
Why it matters for compliance teams
Banca d'Italia's circolari are consolidated, frequently updated instruments rather than one-off notices, which means the operative version of a requirement changes without a new document being issued. Its AML provisions are also unusually prescriptive, going well beyond the European directives into concrete customer due diligence procedure.
Seqlense DOC indexes its circolari and provvedimenti in full text with version history, alongside the ECB and EBA material they implement, so an Italian institution can see exactly which text was in force on a given date.
