The National Bank of Belgium is Belgium's central bank and its prudential supervisor. As a Eurosystem member it implements ECB monetary policy in Belgium; as a supervisor it oversees the soundness of banks, insurers, payment service providers and financial market infrastructures, working within the Single Supervisory Mechanism for significant credit institutions. It also operates Belgium's central credit registers and acts as the national resolution authority.
What the NBB publishes
- Circulars and communications to supervised institutions, its main supervisory instrument
- Regulations on prudential requirements, approved by royal decree
- The Financial Stability Report and macroprudential assessments
- Statistics through NBB.Stat, plus economic analyses and working papers
- Opinions, ad hoc studies and annual reports
Why it matters for compliance teams
Belgium hosts financial market infrastructure of systemic importance well beyond its size, and the NBB's oversight of those entities carries international weight. For banks and insurers its circulars are the operative expression of European prudential requirements, including on governance, outsourcing and internal control.
Seqlense DOC indexes NBB circulars and regulations in full text alongside FSMA conduct material and the ECB and EBA standards they implement, so a Belgian institution can see prudential and conduct obligations in a single search.
