Stefan Walter will be the new director of FINMA (Federal Financial Market Supervisory Authority) starting April 1, 2024. He replaces Urban Angehrn, who announced his departure in September 2023, and Birgit Rutishauser, who will remain interim director until March 31, 2024.
Stefan Walter is a 59-year-old German citizen who has been the General Director at the European Central Bank (ECB) since 2014. He developed surveillance for systemically important banks in the eurozone and later focused on horizontal surveillance at the ECB. Prior to his work at the ECB, he was a global bank regulatory and supervisory policy network leader at Ernst & Young.
Walter has a Master's degree in international banking and finance from the University of California at Berkeley and Columbia University. He will bring significant experience and knowledge in financial markets and international surveillance to FINMA.
